To say that Ron
Maltarich was tough would be an understatement of gross proportions.
A four-year starter and letterwinner with the Scot football team, Ron,
who was known to his teammates as “R.J.,” played every game except for a
handful during his junior year when he was sidelined with a dislocated elbow.
And even with the injury, he hastened his return to the lineup by playing with
a cast. In fact, he made 11 tackles and had three assists in less than one half
of play in his first game back against
In his first year, he was named Most Valuable Freshman after posting 57
solo tackles and 40 assists. He went on to be selected as the Scots’
Outstanding Defensive Lineman as a sophomore, junior and senior.
Not surprisingly, he was elected team captain for his senior year.
Following the season, he was named first-team All-Ohio Conference after leading
the team in tackles for the third time in four years. Even more amazing, he was
named second-team All-OAC after playing just three games as a junior.
As a senior, Ron was instrumental in guiding the Scots to a series of
significant accomplishments, including leading
Other highlights included recovering three fumbles in eight minutes
during a game with nationally ranked
Ron’s talents were not limited to football, however. He was a standout
in track and field for one year, earning the honor of Most Valuable Freshman
after setting a record in the 600-meter dash (1:14.1) and being a member of the
record-setting mile relay team (3:28).
Today (1992), Ron is a marketing manager with the Goodyear Tire and Rubber
Company. He and his wife Kitty (Judy), a 1972 College of Wooster graduate, live
in Lincoln, Nebraska with their five children—Lisa, Matthew, Penny, Nikki and
Steve.
Update: In 2000, Ron was inducted into the Akron St.Vincent-St.Mary HS Hall of Fame. Ron retired from Goodyear, after 30 years of service, as General Manager of the global power transmission belt business. He moved to London, Ohio and was named President of The Litens Aftermarket Network based in the Columbus area. Retiring in 2014, Ron was committee Chairman of the Wooster "W" Association "Hall of Fame" from 2013 to 2017.
As Chairman of the "W" Association, Ron (RJ) implemented the data bases for Wooster Teams (www.woosterteam.com) & The Hall of Fame (www.woosterhalloffame.com)
